Hall organized a band called the Kentucky Travelers that performed before movies for a traveling theater. During a stint in the army, Hall performed over the Armed Forces Radio Network and wrote comic, light hearted songs about life in the U. S. Army. His early career included being a radio announcer at WRON, a local radio station in Ronceverte, West Virginia. Hall was also an announcer at WVRC Radio in Spencer, West Virginia in the 1960\u2019s. He worked briefly at WDOC in Prestonsburg.<br \/>\nHall\u2019s big songwriting break came in 1963, when country singer Jimmy C. Newman recorded his song, \u201cDJ for a Day.\u201d Soon Hall moved to Nashville, and within months, he had songs climbing the charts. Hall has been nicknamed \u201cThe Story Teller,\u201d and he has written songs for dozens of country stars, including Johnny Cash, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, Alan Jackson, and Bobby Bare.<br \/>\nOne of his earliest successful songwriting ventures, \u201cHarper Valley PTA\u201d, was recorded in 1968 by Jeannie C. Riley, sold over six million copies, and won both a Grammy Award and CMA award. The song would go on to inspire a motion picture and television program of the same name. Hall himself has recorded this song on his album The Definitive Collection. Hall\u2019s recording career took off after Riley\u2019s rendition of the song, and he had such hits as \u201cA Week in a Country Jail,\u201d \u201cOld Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine\u201d, \u201cI Love\u201d, \u201cCountry Is\u201d, \u201cThe Year Clayton Delaney Died\u201d, \u201cI Like Beer\u201d, \u201cFaster Horses\u201d, and many others. He is also noted for his children-oriented songs, including \u201cSneaky Snake\u201d and \u201cI Care\u201d, the latter of which hit #1 on the country charts in 1975.<br \/>\nHall won the Grammy Award for Best Album Notes in 1973 for the notes he wrote for his album Tom T. Hall\u2019s Greatest Hits. He was nominated for, but did not win, the same award in 1976 for his album Greatest Hits, Volume 2.<br \/>\nHe also hosted the syndicated country music TV show Pop! Goes the Country in 1980.<br \/>\nHis 1996 song \u201cLittle Bitty\u201d, from the album Songs from Sopchoppy, became a #1 single that year when it was recorded by Alan Jackson.<br \/>\nHis song \u201cI Love\u201d, in which the narrator lists the things in life that he loves, was used, with altered lyrics, in a popular 2003 TV commercial for Coors Light.<br \/>\nOn July 3, 2007, he released the CD Tom T. Hall Sings Miss Dixie &amp; Tom T. on his independent bluegrass label Blue Circle Records.<br \/>\nOn February 12, 2008, Hall was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.<br \/>\nHis first love seemed to be Bluegrass, and for 12 consecutive years from 2002 thru 2015, Hall won the Bluegrass Songwriter of the Year award.<br \/>\nHis wife, Dixie, passed away at age 80 in 2015.<br \/>\nTom is no longer an regularly active performer.\u00a0 His son Dean is following in his Dad&#8217;s footsteps in the music business as a songwriter and performer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a teenager, Tom T.
