He has been in demand and touring extensively up until now.
His grandpa bought his first guitar at age 5, and he began to seriously play and sing at around 13. “I always have loved reading, and writing began early with me, too.”
Childers is the son of a strip miner and vocal about the environmental impact from the industry, yet holding to an ingrained respect for those who make a living thereby. “We can be positive participants, or we can hold on to this extraction behavior,” he says.
Miners are among the people who populate his songs, alongside fox hunters, millworkers and barroom regulars. On Peace of Mind, from his new album Country Squire, a menthol-smoking, Avon makeup-selling mother of a cheerleader distractedly burns frozen waffles as she mulls over what is turning out wrong in her life.
Childers once summarized that his writings often portray “characters that are led astray.”
Miles Miller, a friend of Childers‘ and drummer for Sturgill Simpson’s, introduced the two singer/songwriters. A short time after, Simpson decided to produce a record for Childers with the assistance of engineer David Ferguson.
After release in 2017 of his album Purgatory, Tyler Childers was chatting with his producer, Sturgill Simpson, himself a Grammy winner. “He said: ‘This Purgatory album might do something,” Simpson chimed in with, “You might be able to make a payment on your own piece of land. You’ll never see the land… but it’ll be there!”
Last year, Childers was on the road so often that he rarely made i back home long enough to mow the grass. In the first half of 2019, he was finishing with 10 straight weeks of touring, including dates opening for Willie Nelson and for John Prine. Prine tagged Tyler for a limited-edition cover of Paradise, Prine’s famous 1971song about the devastation of strip mining in Muhlenberg County in southern Kentucky.
Purgatory, was Childers’s second album, and became his first big success. It peaked at number 17 on the US country chart. Then in 2018 Childers was named Emerging Artist of the Year at the Americana awards. He made that land payment, too, with his wife, the singer-songwriter Senora May, for that tract of land a short drive outside the small Kentucky town of Irvine in Estill County.
Musically, the “ancient” quality that a lot of fans point out about Childers’s songs is linked to the baked-in bluegrass and country roots so prevalent in Kentucky. Childers was born and raised between Paintsville and Louisa – so close to West Virginia that when the chef Anthony Bourdain did an episode of his travelogue Parts Unknown in that state, he featured Childers’s songs. “Straight as the crow flies, I grew up 20 minutes from 23,” Childers says.
